December Newsletter

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Wow, what a November! I can’t believe how incredibly lucky we all were with temperatures in the 60s right through the end of the month. Of course, reality will set in and the colder weather will arrive, but don’t worry! As I mentioned last month, now’s the perfect time to keep your swing going with our indoor simulators at Club 1897 at Atlantic City CC or Scotland Run GC.

With Thanksgiving behind us and the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season officially here, I want to remind you of a couple things on the horizon. First, we have cancelled this year’s Annual Member Holiday Party for obvious reasons. We absolutely love this event, and it pains us to have to cancel, but that just means we will have to throw one hell of a party in 2021!

Our annual Bonus Bucks Gift Card Sale will be Saturday & Sunday, December 12th & 13th. Like years past, for every $100 you buy in gift cards, you will receive $20 in Bonus Bucks that can be used for golf, golf shop merchandise or food & beverage.

Member renewal season begins in January as well. There is no doubt that this was the best member year we’ve ever had. Plenty of events, tons of new faces and a lot of great golf weather to get us through 2020. We can’t wait to have you back with us in 2021, as we have a BIG year planned with over 30 member events scheduled! That’s all I can say for now, head on over to the Member Events section for more info!

MEMBER EVENTS

The first fairway at Scotland Run at dusk. It’s a little blurry, but you get the idea!

November saw our first ever Glow-Ball event, held at Scotland Run Golf Club. While it happened to be one of the chillier nights of the year, we still had a great time and the course looked very cool, although no picture will do it justice. We plan on holding this event again next year, perhaps multiple times. We are going to double the number of lights along the fairways and greens next year to help light it up even more!

It was a close match after the morning rounds with Captain John Ward’s team holding a 3-point advantage going into the singles. We don’t know if it was a halftime speech or just good drafting, but Team Watts came roaring back in the singles matches. In the end it wasn’t that close, but it always ends up being one of the most fun events we host. Thanks again to the Captains for their time and effort.

2021 THE YEAR OF EVENTS

This is a preliminary list of scheduled events for 2021. We reserve the right to adjust a few dates as needed, but go ahead and mark these on your calendar now!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Please welcome all of our new members who have joined us over the last month. We look forward to seeing you on the course and playing in the member events!

SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

WE NEED A RULING PART

A bunker edge at Atlantic City CC where bunker rakes enter and exit to groom the bunker.

The same bunker redefined with a nice sharp edge!

I feel quite fortunate that the fall weather has been so cooperative. This mild weather has given us in grounds an extended opportunity to work on making the course stronger and healthier for 2021.

We have been busy “Verti-Quaking" tees and fairways, aerifying high traffic areas, fertilizing, working on cart paths, and mowing down native areas.

A few months back, I wrote my monthly article entitled “Can We Get a Ruling” that focused on worn areas outside of some of our bunkers. We were finally able to address these areas and install sod to clean up the look! I am very happy with how they turned out!

As long as the weather holds out, I hope we can rebuild a couple of tees this winter and continue our cart path work throughout the property.  I look forward to seeing most of you out on the course this fall and winter, but if not, please have a wonderful and very safe holiday season!

TIMBERRRR!

Trees along the left side of #11 at Ballamor GC, yet to be pruned and cleaned.

The right side of #11, after the trees have been limbed up.

As the weather changes and the growth of the grass starts to slow down, we are able to shift our focus from normal maintenance tasks to other things that we quite simply don’t have time to do during the heart of the season. One of the projects that is very popular this time of year with golf course maintenance teams is tree work. This is a great time of year to take out the dead trees that could be dangerous if they are left standing, and to evaluate other trees that are unhealthy or are detrimental to the playability of the golf course.

Over the last two seasons, we have been working on an extensive pruning program with the trees on the golf course. The first picture shows trees from the left side of #11.  As you can see, there are numerous limbs hanging down, and the visibility is severely limited by the trees. The second picture is from the right side of #11 that has already been completed. You should notice a much cleaner look with improved visibility between holes. My team has done a fantastic job with this, and we will continue to do other areas of the course as time permits. I sincerely hope you all have an enjoyable and safe holiday season with friends and family, and we’ll see you on the course!

DRAINAGE, DRAINAGE, DRAINAGE!

Drainage lines cut behind #18 green at Scotland Run GC.

Proof drainage was needed—we hit water as we dug!

There are always areas on any golf course where drainage fails over time or was never installed because it didn’t seem necessary at the time. However, as changes are made to the golf course over the years, the need for drainage may change. What wasn’t necessary at one time, may now be needed. We have tackled some of these areas over the years, and we will continue to do so.  No one likes a lost ball (plugged) in the middle of the fairway! Our biggest drainage project planned for this winter is #8 fairway. We have already been able to tackle a few small areas to date, such as behind #18 green.
